Henryk Kasperczak, the press conference…

January 8th, 2008 | By: Magnusson | 7 Comments »

arton5885.jpgThis is the whole press conference that took place this afternoon in Dakar. Only for die-hard fans and french speakers but it’s still a pretty interesting watch.
The national coach is Henryk Kasperczak, polish and french player who famously finished his career at Metz as a player and coached FC Metz(78/84), AS Saint-Etienne(84/87), RC Strasbourg(87/89), RC France(89/90), Montpellier HSC(90/92), Lille OSC(92/93), Cote d’Ivoire(93/94), Tunisie(94/98), Bastia(98), Maroc(99/00), Mali (01/02), Krakow(02/05) and Sénégal(06/..). He hasn’t won anything as a coach since 1990. So I don’t think it is a good sign for us. As Laurie pointed out in the comments, he’s not a native french-speaker and has a slight accent.

Revealing my ignorance here. Who’s in the video and what’s his background? I’m guessing he’s not a native French speaker because I have no trouble understanding him. :-)

The funny thing about him being a non-native speaker is that it makes it easier for me to understand him. He speaks slowly and with very few idioms, and chooses words that I would probably choose on a similar topic. More than makes up for the accent!

Hearing him speak brings back memories of a day when my friend and I asked for his autograph when we were walking home from school and saw him outside the old FTF headquarters. Meeting Zoubeir Beya in a similar situation was cooler but I’ll always remember Kasperczak being like “so this is the new generation of players…” Didn’t quite turn out that way but he seemed like a pretty nice guy.

Yeah he is pretty funny. See how he says that journalists should come and ask him if hesaid those things or not. Saying that he would go ask his wife if he heard that she didn’t love him anymore. Every body seems to be loving this guy in the senegalese press, maybe because he learned their names and knows all of them. But that goes a long way.

It definitely does man. Roger Lemerre should take some tips from him in people skills. Our coach comes off like a huge prick. Typiquement Francais quoi! Je plaisante. But people go as far as to use metaphors of occupation when describing his indifference towards the opinions of all Tunisians. At least Henryk knows how to throw a joke or two in there.
